Mary-Katherine McMahon
Registered Physiotherapist
M.Sc. PT, B.Sc. Kin

I’m Mary-Katherine McMahon, a physiotherapist licensed in the provinces of Quebec and Ontario. I earned my Master of Science in Physical Therapy from the University of Toronto in 2014, and my Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology from McGill in 2011.

My Approach

I have been working full-time as a physiotherapist in private practice orthopaedics for the last 8 years and am forever grateful for the invaluable experience I gained during my 8 years at Hawkesbury Therapy.  Over the past 8 years, I have worked to continuously develop my clinical assessment and treatment skills, particularly with respect to manual therapy (i.e. “hands-on” treatment).  I have developed a treatment approach which consists of manual therapy often coupled with extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT), which proves to be highly effective in treating a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. ESWT helps to increase blood flow to the injured or painful tissues, decreasing inflammation, and increasing the efficiency of healing. ESWT has an anaesthetic effect post-treatment, thereby decreasing patient sensitivity, both in acute and chronic conditions. As such, an approach combining the therapeutic effects of ESWT and manual therapy allows the patient to experience, overall, a less painful and more rapid recovery.

In addition to completing training courses in ESWT, I possess my Level 1 and 2 certifications in Medical Yoga Therapy for registered health care professionals. Yoga is one of my personal passions, and the therapeutic effects of yoga, both short and long-term, are boundless. I often use yoga poses and/or routines in my practice as an adjunct to the hands-on treatment I provide. Yoga not only increases range of motion, flexibility, balance, and strength, but it also increases our body awareness, which is crucial to effective healing. Yoga also helps to energize us and makes us feel good!
